Seriously Fun Tutoring!
STRUCTURED LITERACY, WRITING STAMINA, & OTHER SHENANIGANS
As a foundational literacy tutor, I nurture resistant writers through the science (and joy) of reading. My pedagogy is well-rooted in research, classroom experience, and the belief that learning should be seriously fun!
Primarily, I support upper elementary school students, ages 8 - 12, with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and ADHD. Research shows that these learners greatly benefit from a structured literacy approach anchored in explicit phonics instruction. In many settings, this work is dull drudgery. Not in mine! Through silly games, personalized projects, movement breaks, and other multi-sensory activities, I always keep my students eagerly engaged.
Each hour-long session incorporates a well-paced mix of targeted literacy skills:
Regular fluency and spelling assessments
Letter formation, mechanics, and writing stamina
Foundational decoding skills
Phonics-based word sorts and games
Vocabulary and red words
Creative writing exercises
Shenanigans and tomfoolery
A bit about me: In 2018, I received an M.A.T. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia and I’ve been an upper elementary school teacher ever since. Outside the classroom, I’ve guided the implementation of new academic programs as a K-5 Curriculum Coordinator. More recently, I became an Orton-Gillingham certified practitioner through the Institute of Multi-Sensory Education. All that’s to say: I love the work of childhood learning!
